Chevy Convertibles
Chevrolet's Introduction of the V8
Chevrolet introduced a 265 cubic inch V8 in 1955. The new V8 featured an overhead valve high compression engine with a short stroke that proved to be very reliable. It was such a great design that it has remained in production in one form or another for decades. The Base V8 rated at 162 hp featured a 2 barrel carburetor. The V8 also had a Power Pack option sporting 180 hp aspirated with a 4 barrel carburetor. Somewhat later Chevrolet offered a Super Power Pack option that added 15 more hp. This was achieved by making the engine higher in compression.
Chevy enthusiasts think of the Bel-Air and the V8 as just the way it was. But the story was they were not dependent on each other. 1955 and the Bel-Air was the year the full size Chevrolet got the V8 and new styling that labeled it as the Hot One by car enthusiasts. A somewhat different concept that the other car manufactures the Bel-Air styling was considered clean and crisp.
Fuelie Cars
For 1957 the power plant grew to the now famous 283 cubic inches or (4,638 cc). The new power plan was billed as the (Super Turbo Fire V8) producing 1 horse power per cubic inch. This option was achieved with the help of continuous fuel injection. The new power plant earned nick name (fuelie) cars. Most Bel-Airs had the standard carburetion so today the “fuelie” cars are very rare.
The 1957 Bel-Airs are the most recognizable of American cars for all time. Today meticulous restored and well maintained collectables can still be found (especially Sport Coupes and Convertibles), are the most sought after examples of these awesome cars. The 57 was known as fuel efficient, roomy and very tastefully adorned with chrome. The 1957 Bel-Air was seen a far superior to Detroit’s oversized over-decorated rolling off the assembly lines we saw for the next 20 years or so.
