Designed to take on its European counterparts, with names like MG, Mercedes and other makers, below average sales prior to '57 showed General Motors was not willing to compromise quality. At this period in history, the American car market dreamed of a new design with speed and elegance.
When Chevrolet acknowledged changes were needed to improve sales they rapidly leaped into action. Starting with a bit of indecision they were inside the ring fight to pull off something unique. The something special proved to be Chevrolet's new V8 engine.
But the 57 took America by surprise with the cutting edge V8 specially changed to squash the European counterparts. For the 1st time in American history, Chevrolet was on top of world. 1957 was the year that produced the most well-known vehicle on the planet right now.
Still true right now some of us even now keep in mind the old billboard campaigns of Chevrolet across the USA. The advertisements stood proud telling the people of this excellent country that they don't write songs about Volvos! And it's still true right now!
